Mt Moriah

Sermon Notes 3/17/13

Delivered by Bishop Walker

Text:    Genesis 22:1-9

Abraham’s Faith Confirmed

1Now it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!”

And he said, “Here I am.”

2Then He said, “Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.”

3So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. 5And Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.”

6So Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together. 7But Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!”

And he said, “Here I am, my son.”

Then he said, “Look, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?”

8And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together.

9Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.

11But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!”

So he said, “Here I am.”

12And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”

13Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. 14And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

We all go through test. We should not view this as something negative, but instead  we should view this as something that God sees necessary for our next level. It is the place where we sacrifice. It is the place where God gives us a litmus test.

Mt Moriah; it is here, where God finds out what you are made of. The testimony of Mt Moriah is about what is on the other side of it. In Genesis 12, God called Abraham and assured him that he would make a great nation through him. Abraham’s faith at Mount Moriah resulted in many blessings. There are many of you, right now, who are experiencing many situations.

If you can relate to this, know :

I. This is a test of the father

God tested Abraham and every now and then, just like Abraham, God will impose his sovereign will upon your life.

God’s test will:

  1. They are personal – Abraham would go through this test, because it was inevitable. God will tailor make your test. Many people will not understand your test, because it is a personal test.
  2. This is a test of your priorities – Remember Ishmael, the child that Abraham had when he got ahead of God. It is at Mount Moriah, the place of ultimate sacrifice, where you will see God. God don’t want that which did not cost you anything.
  3. If you are not careful, you will put your Isaac in a position that is greater than God. Ex: You got your car, but you hadn’t prayed since you got it. Is your career more important to you than God? God gives us tests to see if there is potential in us.
  4. See if there potential in us? God gives us test to see if there is potential inside of us. We therefore won’t whine about the test. Lord test me until i walk right! Lord test me till I talk right! Lord test me till I live right!

Everything in Genesis 22 is symbolic. The father (Abraham) is going up the mountain sad, but he comes back joyous. This mountain is representative of Calvary. When Abraham went to the land that God instructed him to go, he could not worship for 3 days. This is representative of Jesus rising on the third day.

The enemy will fight you most when you are the closest to hat God has promised you, so you have to have:

II. Tenacious faith

Abraham didn’t question the sanctity of God. Abraham got up and responded.

How did Abraham respond?

  1. Promptly– Abraham responded promptly to God. We have to move quickly when God says move. A delay could be detrimental to your destiny.
  2. People – They have arrived at Mount Moriah (vs 5) and Abraham tells the young men to stay at the foot of the mountain so that he and his son could worship. Be careful who goes up the mountain with you. You don’t need folk speaking against what God promised you.
  3. Prophecy– Come back to you. Abraham had the faith and his son came back to him. Just like this, you don’t know how this thing you are hoping for is going to, but know that it is going to happen.
  4. Abraham’s wood represents his humanity. It represents our weakness, the thing that God delivered us from. Don’t make fun of my wood. The wood represents where we come from.
  5. I bring my fire- Fire is a symbol of the Holy Ghost. When fire hits something, it changes its structure. Just like this, when you are hit by the Holy Ghost, you can’t be the same!
  6. Ignite – The fire was in his hand. This means we must come preheated.
  7. Come with a knife- The knife is used to cut away things. Sometimes we have to cut things away in order to get to our breakthrough.

III. We are coming back after worship

Abraham went up the mountain not knowing exactly how God was going to do it. Though he didn’t know how God was going to do it, he knew  enough about God to know that he was going to do it.

Moriah is the place of ultimate sacrifice. Verse 9 says Abraham reached back and prepared to slay his son.

In verse 11, God tells Abraham not to lay your hand on his son.  God is saying to Abraham, “Since the stuff I gave you (his son) is not more important than Him (God), God tells Abraham to look over his shoulder in verse 13. There was a sacrifice in the thicket. Abraham, called that place Jehovah Jireh? This was the place that The Lord provided.  Know that your next breakthrough will happen at the point of your next Abraham sacrifice!

Baca

Sermon Notes 3.10.13

Delivered by Bishop Walker

Text:

Psalms 84:5-7 Blessed is the man whose strength is in You, Whose heart is set on pilgrimage. As they pass through the Valley of Baca, They make it a spring; The rain also covers it with pools. They go from strength to strength; Each one appears before God in Zion.

We understand God by a variety of experiences. We hold on to these things, because these things keeps us connected to God. God takes us through experiences and trials because it is necessary. How would you know God is a healer if you’ve never been sick? How would we know God is a provider, if we have never been broke? Through our rough situations, we found insight about our spiritual fortitude and this matured us and made us who we are while preparing us to get to our promise. It is through this process of Baca that you get to your there.

The valley of Baca was a passage way to the hills where Israel’s city of refuge was located. People would be weary when they traveled through Baca, but they came through seeking refuge. The refuge of God was the there. Baca was a dessert land with vipers, wild animals, and dessert conditions, but there were wells there too.

It was hard to go through this valley of Baca, without suffering. This is why it was also called the valley of tears. This place WOULD make you cry! Many of you may be in the valley of tears right now and you are trying to get to your there. Know that Baca is not your destiny, but your there is!

I. Inevitable Situation

Everyone must go through this valley. Though this area was, dreaded, it was necessary to get to where you were trying to go.

Conditions of Baca:

a. Dusty – This was a dusty place. Many of you right now, are in this tough place. Like the dust from the dessert like Baca, spirits try to attach to you while you go through this place.

b. Disorienting– It is a place difficult to navigate. Ex– You are almost out of debt and then you end up right back where you started. Just when you think you on your way out, you find yourself in the same situation.

c. Dry – Everything has dried up. Your wonderful relationship full of zeal has dried up. Some of you might not want to admit you’ve been to Baca, but know that if you are in Baca, you are in transient.

D. Transient– It won’t be here much longer. You are just passing through. This is not your place of destiny. the devil wants you to think you will stay there, but know that you are just passing through. Don’t send me mail in Baca, because by the time the package gets here, I will be gone! I almost gave up, but the hand of God pulled me through!

Since I have to go through Baca with the rough terrain, the wild animals, and vipers, what then am I supposed to do while I am in Baca?

II. Got to have the ingenuity to survive

You don’t have to stay there and accept things as they are. You have to move. There is a great amount of ingenuity in you.

Inside you is:

a. Thirst– Baca will make you thirsty. You making it out of Baca will depend on you getting your thirst quenched while you are in there. Like those that found themselves in Baca, many of us thirst for revelation, the word, and a breakthrough!

b. Transform– All the things you have gone through, even your Baca experience, was necessary to show you the power that you have. You can either whine or you can work! You can choose to be depressed or you can dig you a well. According to scripture, they dug wells while in Baca. We have to learn to make the best out of a bad situation in Baca. Stop complaining about how bad it is in Baca and learn to be creative.

III. Develop Good Resources

You got to develop good resources in Baca. The word is part of your resources. This is why you don’t have time to be entertained. The word that you receive is your life line. You came here (or you are reading this) because you need a word.

a. Ground – This is good ground. It might be rough in your finances or on your job or in your school, but know that you are digging in your faith. When you give God glory, if you dig your well, God will deal the rain.

IV. Delivers rain by grace

If you have faith to dig a well, the rain will come from God’s grace. God will supernaturally bring rain into your situation. God will give you the strength to get through the rest of the valley and through this rain. God is sending a rain to come and bless your life right now. He is about to fill your well.

Vs 7- In this verse, we see them going from strength to strength. Each one appears before God in Zion. Just like these people, God has a revelation for your life.

How did we go from strength to strength?

a. Baca increased my strength -The strength you got while going through Baca was for a reason. It is an indicator of where God is about to take you. In Baca, you were released to what God was preparing you for (or where He was about to take you).

God is getting you ready. Set your eyes on where God is taking you to. The devil made a mistake and let you get away and get this word today!

You go through Baca, a place of weeping and rough terrain and it is believed that this is the place that leads to the temple or place of refuge. The only way to get to your promise is to go through this dry place, with wild animals and vipers. God says he will not move until you move! God gave you ingenuity! Dig a well and God will do what you can’t do.

Now you dug a well and God sent the rain. vs 7- I thought I was strong before Baca, but in Baca, I was  convinced  show nuff that I am strong now! Each one appears before God in Zion. Everyone that made the pilgrimage through Baca, got to their destination. Everything God promised you, know that you will get. You will make it to where he promised you. Know that you will get married, know that you will graduate, and know that you will get that job! You will get what God promised when you get out of Baca!
