What the recession taught me, “We should have tithe!” Bible Study 10/28/09
What the recession taught me Pt I
“We should have tithe”
Synopsis of Bible Study 10/28/09
Delivered by Bishop Walker III
We discovered wisdom is the proper application of truth in the series we just came out of. We learned that once we receive truth, it must be applied to our lives. If you have the spirit to hear what God says, you will realize that God doesn’t let things happen that do not have a blessing in it for us. The recession happened and you survived it.
There are 4 lessons that we should have learned during this recession. Today we will discuss one of them.
I. We should have tithed
Recessions back in the bible days were called droughts or famines. In a drought, God would let things dry up by not allowing the rain to come. Droughts were always a result of people breaking covenant with God.
1 Kings 17:1-16: 1 Now Elijah, who was from Tishbe in Gilead, told King Ahab, “As surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives—the God I serve—there will be no dew or rain during the next few years until I give the word!” 2 Then the Lord said to Elijah, 3 “Go to the east and hide by Kerith Brook, near where it enters the Jordan River. 4 Drink from the brook and eat what the ravens bring you, for I have commanded them to bring you food.” 5 So Elijah did as the Lord told him and camped beside Kerith Brook, east of the Jordan. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat each morning and evening, and he drank from the brook. 7 But after a while the brook dried up, for there was no rainfall anywhere in the land. 8 Then the Lord said to Elijah, 9 “Go and live in the village of Zarephath, near the city of Sidon. I have instructed a widow there to feed you.” 10 So he went to Zarephath. As he arrived at the gates of the village, he saw a widow gathering sticks, and he asked her, “Would you please bring me a little water in a cup?” 11 As she was going to get it, he called to her, “Bring me a bite of bread, too.” 12 But she said, “I swear by the Lord your God that I don’t have a single piece of bread in the house. And I have only a handful of flour left in the jar and a little cooking oil in the bottom of the jug. I was just gathering a few sticks to cook this last meal, and then my son and I will die.” 13 But Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid! Go ahead and do just what you’ve said, but make a little bread for me first. Then use what’s left to prepare a meal for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: There will always be flour and olive oil left in your containers until the time when the Lord sends rain and the crops grow again!” 15 So she did as Elijah said, and she and Elijah and her son continued to eat for many days. 16 There was always enough flour and olive oil left in the containers, just as the Lord had promised through Elijah.
1. After God announced that there was going to be a drought or recession, God comes to Elijah and tells him to go to Kerith Brook (Verse 2-3) -The lesson here is that you have to be in the right place.
2. God tells Elijah that if he gets into position, he can drink of the brook a raven will be sent to feed him (Verse 4)-. Just like this, God says he is going to make stuff bless us. He will make a supernatural occurrence out of the natural. God will always take care of us. In this case in the scripture, God is going to use a bird to feed Elijah. In that day, just getting bread was a blessing. God hooked him up so he would get bread and meat in the morning. He gave him breakfast and dinner so to speak. Elijah got his water from the brook at the place where God told him to be and the raven brought him the rest.
3. The brook dried up (recession) (Verse 7). God stopped the rain and Elijah’s water supply runs out. Now we will see Elijah will represent God and he will meet a woman that will represent us.
4. When in recession, you have to be connected to the right people. (Verse 8-9-10). The fast track to this point is this. Here is a woman who is impacted by the recession (drought). The widow and her son are down to their last. They had accepted their situation, because the widow said that her and her son had planned to eat their last and die. Elijah asks her to make him a cake of bread first. If you are down to you last and you have said it is over after this, you would say step away in the name of Jesus, when someone asked for the last meal you have! The bible says she obeyed the man of God and made him a cake of bread and as a result, her meal and bread never run out. God never gave her overflow, but he just kept something in her barrel. Every time she went back for more, there was something there. We don’t have to have 15 cars, just let the car start every time we start it up. We don’t have to be rich, but let us have money every time we go to pay a bill (during the recession).
5. The recession was a test for the kingdom of God. People of the world couldn’t handle it. They were losing their money and committing suicide. We are the people of God. If we had done things before the recession, we wouldn’t have known there was a recession. The country didn’t run out of money as a cause of the recession. The money just changed hands. You should have tithed.
6. The real issue of tithing is about ownership. Some argue that the tithe is about Old Testament Law. 400 yrs exactly before Moses went up Mount Sinai and got the law on tablets, Abraham paid tithes. Some of us miss this because we think our money is ours. You say it is yours, but it really belongs to the Lord. Psalm 24:1: 1The earth is the LORD’s and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. – God says he owns everything. Job says he gives and he takes away, blessed be the name of the Lord.
7. Hosea falls in love with Gomer who is a worldly woman. She represents Israel’s back sliding. She did not know that God gave her what she had. Hosea 2:8: 8For she did not know that I gave her corn, and wine, and oil, and multiplied her silver and gold, which they prepared for Baal.- Since she did not know that God gave her everything she had, she spent it all on Baal instead of God. Because she didn’t know, she made the devil rich and grew his kingdom and not God.
8. Genesis 14 reflects that Abraham gave his tithes. Genesis 14:20:20 And blessed be God Most High, who has defeated your enemies for you.” Then Abram gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the goods he had recovered. – Abraham is the father of our faith. Out of Abraham come 3 major world religions. Muslim, Christianity, and Judaism all come out of this one man. Even here in America, everything we do, we do in the spirit of our founding fathers. Everything is based on the constitution. Most of the time, the laws we make or defend is based on what are founding fathers meant when they wrote the constitution. We are constantly in pursuit about original intent. We value the constitution because it speaks to what our forefathers said. If Abraham got his blessing, it was a result of Abraham paying his tithes. Jacob, his grandson, paid tithes – Genesis 28:22: 22And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee. – In this scripture, Abraham proclaims that all God gives to him; he will give a 10th back to God.
9. Everything that comes to you as increase belongs to the Lord. Leviticus 27:30: 30And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’s: it is holy unto the LORD.-Everything that comes to you as increase, belongs to the Lord. Therefore a 10th goes back to God.
10. There is a penalty for not paying your tithe. Leviticus 27:31: 31And if a man will at all redeem ought of his tithes, he shall add thereto the fifth part thereof. – If a man does not pay his tithe, he must add a fifth to the value of it. Proverbs 3:9-10: 9Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: – The first born of each flock belongs to God also.
11. Do we tithe off of our net or our gross 19 The teachers of religious law and the leading priests wanted to arrest Jesus immediately because they realized he was telling the story against them—they were the wicked farmers. But they were afraid of the people’s reaction. 20 Watching for their opportunity, the leaders sent spies pretending to be honest men. They tried to get Jesus to say something that could be reported to the Roman governor so he would arrest Jesus. 21 “Teacher,” they said, “we know that you speak and teach what is right and are not influenced by what others think. You teach the way of God truthfully. 22 Now tell us—is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” 23 He saw through their trickery and said, 24 “Show me a Roman coin.[a] Whose picture and title are stamped on it?” “Caesar’s,” they replied.25 “Well then,” he said, “give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.” – Everyone went to Rome to pay taxes. The question was asked directed to Jesus by the Scribes. They wanted to know if it was lawful to pay taxes to Caesar. He replied to them, give to the IRS (Caesar) what is the IRS (Caesar) and what is God’s, give to God. Where does Caesar or the IRS get their cut? They get theirs off the top? If Caesar or the IRS gets theirs off the top, then so why shouldn’t God. If you don’t let the devil allow you to tip out before this is over, what we share is going to change your life about tithing.
12. It is 1500 years after Moses received the law that Jesus affirmed the principle of tithing. Matthew 23:23: 23Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
II. Why I believe in tithing
1. Tithing is bible doctrine with continuity in the scriptures, before, during, and after Moses law.
2. The Tithe is not mine, it belongs to the Lord. The earth is the Lords and the fullness thereof.
3. . Tithing is an indicator of our faithfulness. It is a weekly, semimonthly, or monthly opportunity to demonstrate to God our faithfulness.
4. Tithing is an indicator of our generosity. It is about your attitude. 2 Corinthians 9:7:7Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.- We tithe because we want to be a blessing to others., Proverbs 22:9: 9He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth of his bread to the poor.
5. Tithing allows God called Ministers to devote themselves fully to the word. Numbers 18:21: 21And, behold, I have given the children of Levi all the tenth in Israel for an inheritance, for their service which they serve, even the service of the tabernacle of the congregation.- Those that are preaching the word of God, tithing makes it possible for them to live. What are they supposed to live off of?
6. We tithe because we wouldn’t want to take a chance on God considering us to be a robber. A burglar and a robber are two different things. A robber will rob you when you are there often with the intentions of harming you. A burglar waits until you are not at home and sneaks in. When you rob God, you are considered a robber according to the scripture. You cause bodily harm to the congregation. You hurt the body of Christ by preventing her to do what she is supposed to do for the kingdom.
7. God says he wants his house to be abundantly supplied. Every preacher says the kingdom went down (through church tithing and offering) during the recession. Here was the perfect opportunity to show the world we were still going strong, but we missed it! We got scared and tightened up our wallet and start acting like the world. We made God look like a dead beat dad by our lack of faith. We made it look as if God had children he didn’t take care of.
8. God says if we are faithful in tithes and offering, he will open the windows of heaven and pour us out abundant blessings.
9. We are honoring the Lord when we give the tithe. Proverbs 3:9-10: 9Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: 10So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.- Imagine a banquet in your honor. 500 people are there with their money. When it is time to honor you monetarily, 200 people get up walk out. It is like this on many Sunday mornings. People worship the Lord and get full on the word and then they walk out at the end before giving their offering. When you honor God in your giving, you are remembering when you reached for something and didn’t have it. God loves a cheerful giver! If you can shout on receiving from God, why can’t you shout on giving?
10. God in turn grants you abundance. God grants us abundance as a result of tithing. Malachi 3:10: 10Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.
11. There is a bible principle of sowing and reaping. We tithe because the bible teaches it as a part of sowing and reaping. We sow the tithe and we reap blessings as a harvest.
12. Our heart is in the kingdom of God and in the churches where we are fed. If our heart is there, our treasure will be also. That is what this test (the recession) was about. It was about where your heart was. You are supposed to tithe where you are getting fed. Matthew 6:21: 21For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
Malachi 3:6-12: 6For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. 7Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts. But ye said, Wherein shall we return? 8Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. 9Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. 10Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. 11And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts. 12And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts.
1. God says he is over this thing (verse 6). Just because things happen in the world, God does not change. We are in the blood line, because we are sons of Jacob and Abraham. We will not go under, because we have a blood line. We have a covenant with God.
2. God says he wants us to return to him (Verse 7). He wants us to return to him and he will return to us. God says in verse 8, the easiest way to know where you heart is, is to ask about your money. We asked how we rob God. Well it is in tithe and offerings. Because we robbed him, verse 9 says our stuff will not grow. We allow a curse to enter into our home. Stuff will break down, before it supposed to break down.
3. You can’t play with this; bring the entire tithe to the storehouse (Verse 10). The storehouse is where you are getting fed. God says his house should never have to struggle. Ex- Bishop Walker explains that we are going to cancel this debt (referring to Old HB) through tithe and offering just like we did Antioch! Bishop explains that we are not going to be selling M&M’s, fish sandwiches, or anything like that. The meat is in the house. It’s just not being released. The issue of tithing is the only place in the bible where God says put him on trail. God says he will put everything on the line for this particular principle. Why do you let the devil try and stop you from doing this? God is not a man that he would lie!
III. Why are we teaching this?
1. The reason the recession happened was to reveal to us that we should have tithe. It is not just about the increase, it is about verse 11 where it says he will stop the taker from taking from us. The enemy took your 401k, your house, your job, your stuff … If you haven’t been consistently tithing, then you anger God. God says he had a generation of folk that wasn’t consistent. When Israel was on their way out of Egypt, he said the death angel was going to ride. He told them to put blood on the post. When the death angel saw that, he would pass over that particular house. God says foreclosure is supposed to pass over you because of who you are in the kingdom. God will rebuke. It is supposed to be a recession, but it was supposed to pass over you. All those people in the world that hated on you take look at them now. These are the same people that were supposed to look at you and say like in verse 12, all nations shall call you blessed!
2. Antoine Walker, #8 for the Celtics is on the front of yahoo.com today. He made $110 million playing basketball during his career. Today he is broke and in debt. Mike Tyson made 300 million dollars during his career. He is broke today too. We make more money today than our grandparents ever did. Some of us are the first generation in our families to make over $50,000/yr and yet we will come to church and maybe give 5 dollars to God. If you went to grandmother’s house who never made of what we make, you will have to recognize that she always had enough to food to feed everyone. Ex-Mother Holland joined Mt Zion in 1932, but if she could stand up and testify for us right now, she would say she has seen a lot. She saw the election of President Franklin Roosevelt all the way up to the election of President Barack Obama. She has seen a lot, but she would tell you that she has never seen righteous begging bread. Never again will we be affected like this again come recession or whatever!
We are preaching this message because Bishop Walker says he watches people struggle that didn’t have to struggle during the recession. This is a critical area that we should have learned before now. If this stuff happens again, it will not affect us, because this time we have heard this word. God never intends for us to struggle. Remember, we are the lenders not the borrowers!

Power of a changed mind Part IV, “The power to change circumstances” Sermon 10/25/09
Power of a changed mind Part IV
The power to change circumstances
Synopsis of Sermon 10/25/09
Delivered by Bishop Walker III
What God does for others, he can do the same to you. We have to come to the understanding that God is able. There is a moment when we understand that God can change our circumstances. We have a framework that we can use by simply examining other people’s lives and seeing how God helped them. There will be a time in your life where your faith will be challenged or stretched. God wants you to know he is able to change your circumstances. God is able!
In the text, God is at a wedding in Galilee. It was the 3rd day after Jesus returned to Galilee. John 1:43: 43The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith unto him, Follow me.
Jesus had been invited to a wedding, but what do you do when what you need is not in supply? How do we go on, when what we need to happen, doesn’t happen? We need to know that God can change our circumstances, but it will require our participation. Somebody on your pew or somebody reading this needs a change in their circumstances, but they don’t know how what they need will ever happen.
I. Don’t settle when the wine runs out
John 2:1-4: 1And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: 2And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. 3And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. 4Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
1. They ran out of wine and Jesus says he will not allow this moment to jeopardize his Ministry. They know that Jesus has an anointing on his life, but they are still unsure at this point. After this miracle, they will know that they made right choice when they decided to follow him.
2. They have a wine crisis. You need to accept when the wine runs out. You can’t fix your problem, if you can’t face it. We need something from God and we want to be real. We have a wine crisis. When you have a deficit, you have a choice to claim it as your reality, or realize that God will fix it.
3. What we see at the wedding:
a. People-They had the right people there. When you need a breakthrough, you have to have the right people around you. You need folk that when your wine runs out, they will push you or motivate you. We want to be able to turn to them.
b. Perspective-You got to have the right perspective. We have to see potential or opportunity for miracle to happen. It is all in how you see your situation. If you see your citation as terminal, you can’t get` breakthrough.
c. Present-You got to have the right person present. They had Jesus at the wedding (the right person present) John 2:1-2: 1And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: 2And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.-In this day, there was separation from the wedding and the marriage. The only way you can have a wedding become a marriage is including Jesus in it. Is Jesus in the house? Is Jesus in your marriage? Jesus is the best thing to happen to us
d. Prayer-We have to have the power of prayer. When your wine runs out, don’t run to people. We have to take our problem to the answer. There is power in prayers. When you ask God for help, you are praying out of faith, not desperation. Hebrews 11:6: 6But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. -We have to believe before we get on our knees that God is able to deliver what we are asking God for.
4. When our wine runs out, we refuse to accept it as the last word. Wine in this context represents liveliness. Water represents life. You can have life, but no liveliness. You can be here, but not here at the same time. In other words, you can be physically here, but residing here without Joy. You can wake up, but not be lively. This is about your willingness to obey.
II. Demonstrate a willingness to obey/
John 2:6-8: 6And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. 7Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.
1. You got to be willing to obey. God gives specific directions to people to participate in their change. We have a responsibility in our change and the process of coming about. Whatever God says do, do it! Don’t speculate and don’t be a hearer. Be a doer.
2. Use what you have. They have water. Remember water represents life and wine represents liveliness. Jesus says take what you have and fill the water pots. There were six waterpots that were supposed to be filled. 6 represents number for man. We are even buried 6 feet when we die. When you maximize your potential and do everything you can, he will step in. God told Moses to use what you had (the staff) and he would turn it into something useful. What about the 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread? They used what they had and it feed over 5,000 people. Take what you have and put it in the master’s hand. What you have is valuable and significant.
3. In Israel, when water would come (such as rain) , they valued it, because it was scarce. We have to learn to:
a. Release it-You got to be willing to release what you have. It might not be anything in your hands, but in God’s hands, it can be a lot.
b. Reposition-You have to release it to get it replenished. It is about repositioning. If what you have is not enough, be willing to release it, and allow God to replenish it.
4. Some blessings are based on our obedience. John 2:8: 8And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.-Jesus told them to draw out the new wine. They were supposed to take water and pour it into 6 water pots, because they had run out of wine. By the time they got through filling them up, something happens. This is a right now blessing. This kind of blessing is based on your obedience. We believe if we do what God asks, by the time we are finished he will have already worked it out.
III. Determined to use this as a witnessing opportunity
John 2:9-11: 9When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, 10And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now. 11This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.
1. Servant in Greek is the same word used for deacon in the New Testament. In verse 10, normally at the wedding, the best wine was served at the beginning. When everyone has drunk from the good wine, the cheap wine was brought out because no one would notice. Verse 11 says this miracle that was about to take place (Jesus turning water into wine) would be the beginning of miracles done by Jesus throughout his Ministry.
2. Jesus shows up and we know he turns water to wine. We have all heard that sermon before. There has to be a deeper revelation in the text than this miracle. This is really about sharing. When they got wine, they had to share. When God blesses you, you obligated to share. There is a crowed of people who did not know where the new wine came from. But the servants knew, when a miracle of change happens in your life, it should create a question, giving you a witnessing opportunity. How did this happen? One didn’t know, but the servants knew.
3. There is a difference between members and servants. Servants obey him in the beginning. Members are oblivious to what happened. If no one else knows, the servants know.
4. What is critical in this message is this:
5. Jesus goes to wedding in cannon. It is his first miracle. There was no difference between marriage and weddings in that day (because they didn’t have Jesus). The disciples were following Jesus, but had reservations. Jesus is aware, so when his mother says there was no wine; Jesus says it is not his hour yet. Jesus decided he couldn’t let his disciples follow him without any faith. What he was doing from now on would require their faith. In verse 5, Jesus’ mother says whatever Jesus says do, do it. What did Mary know? Let’s go back to the historical context. There is a reason she said this. We don’t have problem doing what he says do, we have a problem doing whatsoever he says do. In other words, we have limits on what we are willing to do.
6. Jesus says to them in verse 6, fill up the pots. This water that was used was water that was used to wash your hands. It was water set out so anybody could stop by and wash their hands. This was dirty water. It was like bathwater so to speak. This was filthy water that had been sitting up for days. You and I represent this water. We represent life in other people’s hands.
7. Jesus says fill it up to the pots to the brim with this dirty water. Take the dirty water and fill it up to the brim. You have to imagine that they were saying I know you don’t want me to fill this up with the dirty water. Jesus turns the water into wine. The bible says that wine according to the Governor of feast was better than the first. Remember what water and wine represents (Water represents life and wine represents liveliness).
8. The Governor benefited from a changed circumstance. John 2:9-10: 9When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, 10And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.-It is kind of like how people did to you. They wrote you off, because you were not the best thing out there. This is why people shouldn’t prejudge. God takes dirty people, changes them, and he saves the best for last. This is the historical revelation.
9. This isn’t a revelation of restoration. It is the revelation of transformation. Jesus’ disciples say you the man now (after Jesus turned the water into wine)! If it started like this (with the miracle), then they knew the best days are ahead of them. If God has changed your life, this is the beginning of the great things he will do for you. Lame people will leave walking. Deaf men leave hearing. The woman with the issue of blood left healed and whole. Lazarus left alive. This thing is just getting started – John 2:11: 11This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him. – God changes circumstance to manifest his glory in your life. God knows if no one else believes, he will have people that can testify on his behalf. We can say we saw him change this and that. God changed our circumstances.

Power of a changed mind Pt 3
The power to change your crowd
Synopsis of Sermon 10/18/09
Delivered by Bishop Walker III
Text: Judges 7:1-9: 1 So Jerub-baal (that is, Gideon) and his army got up early and went as far as the spring of Harod. The armies of Midian were camped north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh. 2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many warriors with you. If I let all of you fight the Midianites, the Israelites will boast to me that they saved themselves by their own strength. 3 Therefore, tell the people, ‘Whoever is timid or afraid may leave this mountain[a] and go home.’” So 22,000 of them went home, leaving only 10,000 who were willing to fight. 4 But the Lord told Gideon, “There are still too many! Bring them down to the spring, and I will test them to determine who will go with you and who will not.” 5 When Gideon took his warriors down to the water, the Lord told him, “Divide the men into two groups. In one group put all those who cup water in their hands and lap it up with their tongues like dogs. In the other group put all those who kneel down and drink with their mouths in the stream.” 6 Only 300 of the men drank from their hands. All the others got down on their knees and drank with their mouths in the stream. 7 The Lord told Gideon, “With these 300 men I will rescue you and give you victory over the Midianites. Send all the others home.” 8 So Gideon collected the provisions and rams’ horns of the other warriors and sent them home. But he kept the 300 men with him. The Midianite camp was in the valley just below Gideon. 9 That night the Lord said, “Get up! Go down into the Midianite camp, for I have given you victory over them!
It is important that a believer comes to understand is the significance of strategic relations. The more God does in your life, the more refined and intentional your relationships will need to be. Many of you can testify to the validity of relationships. People come and people go. Some stay longer than others, but people come and go. Depending on the season you are in, it is quite common to see this. We will discover today that there are times in our lives when God speaks to us about our crowds. God is aware that many people have emotional attachments to us and this causes us not to be in a position to be objectionable critiques in a relationship. God will change your crowd. You have to realize that you are not throwing them (your relationships) away. You are simply repositioning them, so you can reach your full potential. You have got to understand the power of having the right people in your life.
In the text, Gideon is in the army. Judges 7:12:12And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude. Judges 6:1 says, 1And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD: and the LORD delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years. Because of the things they did in sight of God, he delivered them to the hands of the Midianites. Most of their possessions were destroyed. After 7 yrs, God spoke to Gideon and told him that he was going to turn things around for them. It is amazing that God has to let us hit rock bottom before we decide to get where we need to be. For some of us, if had not had our crises, we would not be as close to God we are now.
God told Gideon to get his army together, because he was about to start turning things around for him. The Midianites have 135,000 men and Gideon has 32,000 men in his army. Gideon is ready and knows he can get the victory. It is right here, God creates a situation.
I. God creates a situation
1. In verse 1, the enemy was in the valley. Gideon is on the mountain with his army. In verse 2, God says Gideon’s crowd was too big to get the victory. 1 So Jerub-baal (that is, Gideon) and his army got up early and went as far as the spring of Harod. The armies of Midian were camped north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh. 2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many warriors with you. If I let all of you fight the Midianites, the Israelites will boast to me that they saved themselves by their own strength. – If God had a let them get the victory with the amount of people that they had, they would have thought the victory was due to them and not God. Gideon was prepared with his own plan, but God had another plan. Some of us have our own plan just like this, but God comes in and snatches the plan and says he has something else he wants to do. Have you been there? God says his ways are not your ways. Lean not to your own understanding. God says Gideon has too many members in his army. In other words Gideon has a crowd control problem.
2. God tries to address the pride issue. Whenever God creates a situation, he is trying to challenge your:
a. Expertise: God needs you to understand that if you don’t declare your deficiencies, you will not experience his suffienties. Anybody ever been here before? Job had position, prestige, and prosperity, but God had a plan in store for him. God took everything from Job. It was so bad; Job declared he would not make it unless God got him through it. David said the Lord is my light and my salvation. We have to realize that we can’t make it unless God takes care of us. The disciples were in a storm and they realized they could not get through the storm on their own. They realized who was on the ship with them. They knew they wouldn’t get through the storm until Jesus declared peace over the situation.
b. Ego: God is also challenging your ego. If you were able to get your own self out of your dilemma, your nose will be so high, you would drown. God has to humble you. This way you know it was nobody but God that brought you through.
c. Expectations: God is about to redefine your expectations. It may be happening this way or that way, but God said if you turn it over to him, you will see that it has an expected in. Man’s extremity is Gods opportunity. Just check God’s record. Just ask the children of Israel at the Red Sea or just ask Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego or ask Daniel who was in the Lion’s Den or even Paul and Silas who sang hymns at midnight. When we take it out of our hands and put it in God’s hands we will see God can do it. When we think we got it figured out, God will create a situation where he will execute his own plan.
II. God causes your crowd to shift
1. This reveals how God takes us through a series of tests and observations to give us a revelation we would have never had. Afterwards, we will look back and thank God for the experience.
2. You will not know your crowd until you experience your crisis. God says let’s do some evaluations. Judges 7:3: Therefore, tell the people, ‘Whoever is timid or afraid may leave this mountain[a] and go home.’” So 22,000 of them went home, leaving only 10,000 who were willing to fight.-God says in this scripture, if you are scared, you can leave now. Everyone looked like they were ready for battle, yet some were scared. God says he has come to show you who is real in your crowd. Some people may look like they are with, but they really are not. After God thinned Gideon’s crowd, there were only about 22,000 people left simply because the others were scared. Ex-2 men came into a church with trench coats. They said everyone that wants to die for the Lord, stay seated. Everybody else can leave. Afterwards, only 2 people were left inside the church. It was at this point, the men in the trench coats said to the Pastor, “Now that the hypocrites are gone, you can preach”.
3. There are people that:
a. Distort –They distort reality. They are driven by fear.
b. Discourage-they infect people around them. They infect people with their negative attitudes and beliefs.
c. Demise-They affect your demise. They are always scary when it comes to operating in vision.
4. Gideon says he can work a new plan after God down sizes his army. God says, hold up in verse 4. God was not done. God informs Gideon that he still had too many people in his army. Judges 7:4: 4 But the Lord told Gideon, “There are still too many! Bring them down to the spring, and I will test them to determine who will go with you and who will not.” – God says bring the 10000 to t he water and let go of the people he would show him to let go of. In verse 5, God said every one that drinks like a dog, sit them to the side. 300 lapped like a dog. 10 000 went to water. Judges 7:5-10: 5 When Gideon took his warriors down to the water, the Lord told him, “Divide the men into two groups. – One crowd went and lay down and just drank like dogs. Another crowd went on one knee and put the water in their hands. God told Gideon to keep the ones that cupped water in hands. The ones that lapped like dogs, God told Gideon to get rid of. To really understand this, you have to know that soldiers pet their swords in their right holster and their shield in left hand. To lie down and put head in water and lap like dogs, you had to take your sword off and lay your shield down.
5. People like this are:
a. Self centered-they think about only themselves.
b. Slackers- they are so absorbed with themselves, they could get others killed. You need some:
6. We need Solid people. These people are people that are on their knees still with sword and the shield on at all times. There are 300 left now at this point of the text. 12 min ago, they had 12,000 soldiers, and now they have 300. The Midianites have 135, 000. Gideon has 300, but God commands you to succeed
III. God commands you to succeed
1. This speaks to our insecurities. The Lord said to Gideon, by the 300 left, he would see them through (verse 7). In verse 8, God didn’t want to see Gideon mess up something. In verse 9, God says he delivered them, even though they have not started the battle. Judges 7:7-9: 7 The Lord told Gideon, “With these 300 men I will rescue you and give you victory over the Midianites. – God says to Gideon that he has already done this. God had already given him the victory, before the battle would even be fought. God sent an angel to speak to Gideon in Judges 6:12. The angel told Gideon that he would get the victory. Judges 6:12:12 The angel of the Lord appeared to him and said, “Mighty hero, the Lord is with you!”- Obedience is better than sacrifice. No matter what it looks like, it is is about obedience.
2. How do 300 people get the victory over 135,000? If you look at Judges 7:15, you see they have 300 men going off to war blasting trumpets.. God says we are getting ready to go into battle because he is going to give them the victory. Judges 7:15: 15 When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed in worship before the Lord.[a] Then he returned to the Israelite camp and shouted, “Get up! For the Lord has given you victory over the Midianite hordes!” There is one problem though. Where is the enemy?. The enemy is already beneath them in the valley.
3. Verse 20 says blow your trumpet. Judges 7:20: 20 Then all three groups blew their horns and broke their jars. They held the blazing torches in their left hands and the horns in their right hands, and they all shouted, “A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!” – The blowing of the trumpet represents the commencement of warfare or a shifting of a season. It represented a spirit of confrontation and a shifting in governing power. The blow of a trumpet represents that a new dominion is about to take over. It is not just that one person blew their trumpet. All 300 people blew their trumpets. This says they all come to declare war. The kingdom of God suffers violence, but the violent takes it by force. When we declare war, we blow our trumpet. Your trumpet is your praise.
4. The children of Israel had empty pitchers. They had lamps in the pitchers.
a. They broke their pitchers (or jars). The pitchers represent survival. Things like water were carried in their pitchers for survival. If God told you break your pitcher he will not break his promise. Lamps were also carried inside the pitchers. The lamps represent light. The enemy had them in darkness. Darkness represents ignorance and separation from God. God has to break you so that your light will shine.
b. Wave your lamps. Know that we are coming out of this dark place.
c. Speak about your sword. The sword in scripture represents the word of God. When you are going into battle, blow your trumpet of praise, break your picture and let your light shine, and open up your mouth and speak your sword. Let the devil know that by God’s stripes you are healed. They said this is Gods sword.
Judges 7:21:21 Each man stood at his position around the camp and watched as all the Midianites rushed around in a panic, shouting as they ran to escape. – Just stand. They ran, because they were not scared. Stand still and let the lord fight your battles
