Revelations 8
The Fall of Babylon
Synopsis of Bible Study 08/24/11
Delivered by Bishop Walker III
The Fall of Babylon (Chapters
17 – 18)
In preveious chapters, you see Babylon fall, but today in scripture, we
see the word Babylon mentioned more than 287
times. This is more times than any other city, except for Jerusalem. Babylon was a literal city on
the Euphrates River. Genesis 11:1-10
talks about the Tower of Babylon and is a good reference scripture. It is important to know that Babylon is the seed
that demonstrated organized hostility towards
God.
Babylon was also the empire that conquered
Judah. Babylon to the Jews was considered the essence of all evil. Babylon was the one that put the Judah into
captivity. You might recall President G.W. Bush called this whole area where
modern day Babylon is (which is Iraq) evil.
Babylon is associated with idolatry and blasphemy.
We will understand this more as we go through Chapters 17 and 18.
In John’s day, Babylon was viewed as
Rome. Today, as it relates to how they are mentioned in the bible, they will
be viewed as a representative of the world
system.
In Chapter 17, we will see the fall of Religious Babylon and in 18, we will see Commercial Babylon.
The fall of religious
Babylon – Chapter 17
1Revelation 17:1The Scarlet Woman and the
Scarlet Beast
1
Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me,
saying to me, Come, I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits
on many waters,
-
This is important because John saw something and one of the 7 angels
would explain what he saw.
Revelation
17:2-6 says 2 with whom the
kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were
made drunk with the wine of her fornication.3 So he carried me away in the
Spirit into the wilderness. And I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast which
was full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 The woman
was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones
and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the
filthiness of her fornication. 5 And on her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY,
BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 6
I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the
martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I marveled with great amazement.
John
sees:
-
The great harlot- According to religous history and legend, Nimrod of Babylon
was the one that found it. Samurais gave birth to a son. She claimed that this son
was born miraculously. This predates Tammuz
Christianity. Tammuz was considered a savoir. He was kiled by a wild beast and
brought back to life, so when scripture refers to Baal, it was referring to Tammuz.
Ezekiel
8:14 says 14 So He brought me to the
door of the north gate of the Lord’s house;
and to my dismay, women were sitting there weeping for Tammuz.-They were weeping for this product of idoltry. This harlot sits on
many waters and presides over many nations. She has international appeal. - When you see fornication mentioned, we are talking about idolatry.
- John saw a woman sitting
on the scarlet (red) beast with seven heads and 10 horns. The woman is riding
the Antichrist. This means she
is supported by the political power
of the beast, but on the other hand, she serves the dominate role, because
she controls the best. - She has the garments
which are emblems of luxury such as garments of purple along with precious
stones. She also is wearing Scarlet or red which represents government. - She also has office
idolatries which is abominations of impurity. - She has filthiness and
fornication. - Remember that the purple
she wore was a rare fabric- In Acts
16 you will run across the woman that was selling these garments. - Written on her forehead
were these names. What is important of historical note is that Roman prostitutes wore their name
on their headband. - Let’s compare the woman
of Revelation 12 with the woman that John saw in Revelation 17:
Revelation
12 woman
-
Mother of the
man-child (this was the child that was caught up to the throne of God soon
after birth) -
Dressed in
heavenly glories. -
She is
influential, because the moon is under her feet - Attacked by Satan
-
Revelation 17 woman
- Mother of harlots
-
Dressed in
worldly splendor -
Over earthly
kings - Attacked by kings
-
These two women tough related, are opposites
and rivals. The Antichrist corresponds to Christ as a rival. Great Babylon
corresponds with woman that bears the man child as her rival and antagonist. The title is not for literal Babylon. The
title is mystery; it is the source of all spiritual
idolatry. -
This woman is the abomination of Satan’s
economical movement. It is the religion of the world system: This is
what Religious Babylon is. It is the religion of the world system. -
Religious Babylon:
- They believe it doesn’t
matter what you believe as long as you believe
its philosophy is right for this seduction. This is what is crippling our
churches today. - They think it is ok as long
as you are positive. We often want somebody to stroke us and pacify us and not
ruffle any feathers. Often we have the position of letting the crowd be big as it
can get as long as it feels good. - It dilutes the essence of
the gospel to make it fit into the world
system. It is the act of wanting the world
to like us.
- They believe it doesn’t
-
The bible says she was drunk with the blood of the saints. This means she
not only persecuted the saints, she partied over their persecution. -
John says he saw this false church and marveled over it. False religion
makes people skeptical of the real thing.
False Religion is the biggest enemy of the church.
Revelation 17:7 The Meaning of the Woman and
the Beast
7 But the angel said
to me, Why did you marvel? I will tell you the mystery of the woman and of the
beast that carries her, which has the seven heads and the ten horns.
- This angel says they are going to tell John about this woman.
-
The fact that she rode the beast is significant. Any tyrant you have
ever seen has always used religion to fulfill its purposes. If you need an
example, just take a look at Libya today.
Revelation 17:8-9 says 8 The beast that you saw was, and is not, and will ascend out of
the bottomless pit and go to perdition. And those who dwell on the earth will
marvel, whose names are not written in the Book of Life from the foundation of
the world, when they see the beast that was, and is not, and yet is. 9 Here is
the mind which has wisdom: The seven heads are seven mountains on which the
woman sits.
-
The 7 mountains are probably referencing John’s day. In his day, the 7
mountains in Rome sat on 7 hills. The Greek translation of that meant 7
mountains. This probably represents 7 kings and kingdoms that are described in Revelation 17:10 (found next).
Revelation 17:10 says 10 There
are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, and the other has not yet come.
And when he comes, he must continue a short time.
-
The five that have fallen – These are the five world empires before
John’s day. They are:- 5 have fallen- Egypt,
Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, and Greece
- 5 have fallen- Egypt,
- The one – Refers to Rome. The greatest power in John’s day was Rome.
- Yet to come- Refers to the revival of the Roman Empire.
-
When he comes it will be a short time- This 7th king will be
taken over by the 8th and he will become the state of the Antichrist,
identified as the 8th king.
Revelation 17:11 says 11 The
beast that was, and is not, is himself also the eighth, and is of the seven,
and is going to perdition.
-
The beast of the Antichrist is clearly identified as the 8th
king. -
This beast is of the 7th in the fact that he shares characteristics of all the world empires
that have gone, but his fate is clear. It is that of perdition meaning he will be
destroyed.
Revelation
17:12-15
says 12 The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom
as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. 13
These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the
beast. 14 These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them,
for He is Lord of lords and King of kings; and those who are with Him are
called, chosen, and faithful. 15 Then he said to me, The waters which you saw,
where the harlot sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations, and tongues.
-
These 10 kings refer to the ten nation confederation that is referred
to in Daniel 2:24-45. – They have one
mind and give authority and power to the beast. They align themselves with the
Antichrist and war with Christ, but they will war with the antichrist. They
will be overcome, because God is Lord of lord and King and kings. -
Scripture says the harlot presides over people, multitudes, nations,
and tongues- Her influence is worldwide
and multicultural. It is a one world
religion.
Revelation 17:16 says 16 And the ten horns
which you saw on the beast, these will hate the harlot, make her desolate and
naked, eat her flesh and burn her with fire.
-
The 10 horns will hate the harlot-She has been riding
them, but now they are going to turn on her. The antichrist will not tolerate any
worship accept worship of himself. Remember
when the devil got tired and wanted the worship to go to him? After seeing the
people admiring the woman, he wants the praise and attention to go to himself
and therefore kills the woman ( the harlot) the son of perdition, the one who
opposes. 2
Thessalonians 2:3-4 explains 3Let
no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come
a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; 4Who
opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is
worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself
that he is God. – What this is really is the Spirit of
religious Babylon. It is the spirit of selfishness that says, “Nobody’s
church but mines.” -
This spirit wants you to believe that if you don’t
belong to our church, you won’t go to heaven. They ought to just be happy that
you are in church. - This church wants to raise up its on religious system.
Revelation 17:17 says 17 For God has put it
into their hearts to fulfill His purpose, to be of one mind, and to give their
kingdom to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled.
-
God put it into their hearts to fulfill his purpose- God ordained the
political support of these 10 kings for the Antichrist. In doing so, God gave
the whole world exactly what they wanted which is godless religion and godless rulers. -
Imagine, religious Babylon starts living this way, godless religion and
godless rulers. You can’t tell the difference between the church and world and you got a political system where the right has
gone too far, the left has not gone far enough, and the tea party has gone coo
coo for coco puffs. As a result, you just don’t know where people are. You
can’t mix the two, because they all need to examine their own reality and get
back to what God says.
Revelation 17:18 says 18 And the woman whom
you saw is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth.
-
She reigns over the kings of the earth- Galatians 4:6 says 6 And because you are sons, God has sent forth
the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, Abba, Father!who reigngsn
over you. -
Religious Babylon- This is the church that dilutes its authority in
order to have appeal to the world and be accepted. As a result, they forget
what God really said. We were never supposed to conform to this world. We were really supposed to be transferred by
the renewing of our mind that we might prove what that good and acceptable
perfect will of God. There is a religious world system that has swept our
nation and watered down the word.
The Fall of Commercial
Babylon -Chapter 18
Be warned that this is going to hurt!
Commercial Babylon
Commercial Babylon is similar to Religious Babylon in this sense:
- Both are under the rule of the Antichrist.
- Both have ruling queens.
- Both are filled with blaspheme.
- Both hate the saints.
- Both shed their blood.
- Both associated with the kings in fornication.
- Both are under judgment and are destroyed.
-
Religious Babylon is called the “Is
Mystery Babylon.”- Commercial Babylon is called
the Great Babylon. -
Religious Babylon’s symbol is a Harlot woman.
- The City of the Commercial
Babylon will be a great city -
Religious Babylon will be identified with Rome.
- Commercial Babylon will be
identified by a port city. -
Religious Babylon will be a whore and mother.
- Commercial Babylon will be habitation
great city, the great market place -
Religious Babylon will be guilty religious abominations
- Commercial Babylon will be guilty
of greed and self indulgence. -
Religious Babylon will be destroyed by political power that previously
supported her. - Commercial Babylon will be
destroyed by a sudden act of God. - Commercial Babylon is
symbolic and it will be judged. John
15:18-19 says 18If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it
hated you. 19If ye were of the world, the world would love his own:
but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world,
therefore the world hateth you.- We trip because we have haters, but this scripture says we will have
haters because he chose us.
- Commercial Babylon will be guilty
- Commercial Babylon will be habitation
- Commercial Babylon will be
- The City of the Commercial
- Commercial Babylon is called
Chapter 18 – The Fall of
Babylon the Great
Revelation 18:1-3 says 1 After these things I saw
another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth
was illuminated with his glory. 2 And he cried mightily with a loud voice,
saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and has become a dwelling place
of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and a cage for every unclean and
hated bird! 3 For all the nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her
fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and
the merchants of the earth have become rich through the abundance of her
luxury.
-
This city became a dwelling place of demons. This is absolute desolation, where the proud achievements
of men have become a waste land of demonic
habitation. -
Babylon’s sin is not only idolatry as referred to in her current fornication,
but it is also pride, greed selfishly held, and wealth. -
Know that God wants you to be blessed God, but he wants you to know you
are a steward of it and not the owner.
If you view it as an owner, you will fall into the world’s Commercial Babylon. When you see it as a steward, you realize that
God blessed you with it, and you will therefore let God govern how you use it.
You will let His word tell you how you should use it. When you find yourself
dismissing what God says do with it, you find yourself dismissing what God says
do with it, and as a result you will fall victim to commercial Babylon.
Revelation 18:4–5 says 4 And I heard another voice
from heaven saying, Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and
lest you receive of her plagues. 5 For her sins have reached to heaven, and God
has remembered her iniquities.
-
These sins have crept into our lives by materialistic lure that pulls
us all in. They are materialism and
vanity. It is a spirit or culture that sweeps and into our community. Isaiah 52:11 says 11 Depart! Depart! Go
out from there, Touch no unclean thing;Go out from the midst of her, Be clean,You
who bear the vessels of the Lord., Jeremiah
50:8 says 8 Move from the midst of Babylon, Go out of the land of the
Chaldeans; And be like the rams before the flocks., Jeremiah 51:45 says 45 My people, go out of the midst of her! And
let everyone deliver himself from the fierce anger of the Lord., 2 Corinthians 6:14 says 14 Do not be
unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has
righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? Ephesians 5:11 says 11 And have no
fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.
Revelation 18:6-8 says 6 Render to her just
as she rendered to you, and repay her double according to her works; in the cup
which she has mixed, mix double for her. 7 In the measure that she glorified
herself and lived luxuriously, in the same measure give her torment and sorrow;
for she says in her heart, I sit as queen, and am no widow, and will not see
sorrow. 8 Therefore her plagues will come in one day—death and mourning and
famine. And she will be utterly burned with fire, for strong is the Lord God
who judges her.
-
The ancient Greek word for render is 591.
apodidomi ap-od-eed’-o-mee
from 575 and 1325
which means to pay debt or to give back what is due. God will give commercial Babylon
exactly what she deserves for all that she has done. A good reference scripture
is Exodus 22:4-9. It tells where a
thief stole and double had to be given back. -
Babylon has a 3 fold sin:
- Self indulgence– She lived luxuriously. God has no problem with this, but this spirit
was so consumed with herself (Commercial Babylon). She only thinks of herself. We
were meant to channel blessings and not keep them for ourselves. Blessings were
meant to flow; else they with sit, get stagnant, and start to stink. - Pride–
She is arrogant. She says she sits like a queen. People who set up and think because
they make a certain amount of money, they are more important than you. God isn’t
concerned about any of this. We might live what you live, or drive what you
have, or have what you have, but God has his hand on us too. This spirit puts isms in the church, the main one being classism. This is something that happens
in churches today and will not be allowed in this Ministry (meaning Mt Zion). - Avoidance of suffering– There is a theory that says if you live right; you
will not have any suffering. This theology is not true. The bible says man born
of a woman is but a few days of trouble.
If you think about it, some storms have gotten the mess right out of our lives
and made us stronger.
- Self indulgence– She lived luxuriously. God has no problem with this, but this spirit
Commercial Babylon destroyed- One day God will send a plague to Commercial
Babylon and it will be burned with fire.
Revelation 18:9-10 – The
World Mourns Babylon’s fall
9 The kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived
luxuriously with her will weep and lament for her, when they see the smoke of
her burning, 10 standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, Alas,
alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! For in one hour your judgment
has come.
- In one hour it all came tumbling down.
Revelation 18:11-16 says 11 And the merchants
of the earth will weep and mourn over her, for no one buys their merchandise
anymore: 12 merchandise of gold and silver, precious stones and pearls, fine
linen and purple, silk and scarlet, every kind of citron wood, every kind of
object of ivory, every kind of object of most precious wood, bronze, iron, and
marble; 13 and cinnamon and incense, fragrant oil and frankincense, wine and
oil, fine flour and wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and bodies
and souls of men. 14 The fruit that your soul longed for has gone from you, and
all the things which are rich and splendid have gone from you, and you shall
find them no more at all. 15 The merchants of these things, who became rich by
her, will stand at a distance for fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, 16
and saying, Alas, alas, that great city that was clothed in fine linen, purple,
and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls! (Bishop
jokingly includes in this list Gucci and Prada)
-
All the things that it took people years to build up will be gone in
one hour. -
Commercial Babylon became rich because it used other poeple. Commercial
exploits people for its own gain.
Revelation 18:17-20 says 17 For in one hour
such great riches came to nothing. Every shipmaster, all who travel by ship,
sailors, and as many as trade on the sea, stood at a distance 18 and cried out
when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What is like this great city? 19
They threw dust on their heads and cried out, weeping and wailing, and saying,
Alas, alas, that great city, in which all who had ships on the sea became rich
by her wealth! For in one hour she is made desolate. 20 Rejoice over her, O
heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets, for God has avenged you on her!
-
International trade- God has avenged her for you. We don’t rejoice when
judgment comes, we just rejoice when the righteous
resolution of God’s judgment comes.
Revelation 18:21 – Finality
of Babylon’s Fall
21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw
it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence the great city Babylon shall be
thrown down, and shall not be found anymore.
- This is part of Jeremiah
instructions were to Seraiah found in Jeremiah
51:61-64 where it says 61 And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When you
arrive in Babylon and see it, and read all these words, 62 then you shall
say, O Lord, You have spoken against this place to cut it off, so that
none shall remain in it, neither man nor beast, but it shall be desolate
forever. 63 Now it shall be, when you have finished reading this book,
that you shall tie a stone to it and throw it out into the Euphrates. 64
Then you shall say, Thus Babylon shall sink and not rise from the
catastrophe that I will bring upon her. And they shall be weary. Thus far
are the words of Jeremiah. Jesus declared this in Matthew 18:6 which says 6But whoso shall offend one of these
little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone
were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the
sea.
-
The great city of Babylon will be thrown down. One day this great
system will be thrown away.
Revelation 18:22 says 22 The sound of
harpists, musicians, flutists, and trumpeters shall not be heard in you
anymore. No craftsman of any craft shall be found in you anymore, and the sound
of a millstone shall not be heard in you anymore.
- All the businesses is going to stop.
Revelation 18:23-24 says
23 The light of a lamp shall not shine in you anymore, and the voice of
bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you anymore. For your merchants were
the great men of the earth, for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived.
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who were
slain on the earth.
-
Commercial Babylon is that world system that can make you so consumed
with stuff that you forget where the stuff came from. It makes the stuff the
idol and turns you away from God. It will make you not think twice about the $200
pair of shoes you want and make you bat an eye if they ask you to sow 100 in
church. Commercial Babylon wants you to put value on it, because it puts value
on you. Suddenly you look in the closet and there is stuff you can’t even pay
for or wear anymore. Drug dealers fight for money. God wants you to be blessed,
but you are not appropriating the
blessing. What does it prophet a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?
It will make you think God and the church is trying to get from you, when it is
robbing you itself. You have no idea how blessed you will be if you do it God’s
way. If you do it commercial Babylon’s way, it has become an idol. -
Commercial Babylon has become an idol and produced people and even religious
leaders that chase money and success. Religous Babylon has fallen. This word is
still right, yet somebody is wrong. God wants you to have nice cars and houses,
but if it becomes your idol, you lose
it all and you will lose your mind. If God is your source, if you lose it all,
you will give God the glory. He can
give us double for our trouble. Look and tell somebody that God is going to
restore you!
